Medical-Legal Assessments for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
We provide comprehensive speech-language assessments for individuals who have sustained a brain injury, including those resulting from motor vehicle accidents (MVAs).

Our Medical-Legal Assessments are detailed evaluations that examine communication, cognitive-communication, and language abilities to help determine the impact of a brain injury on daily life and functioning. These assessments can inform rehabilitation planning, insurance documentation, and legal proceedings.

Assessments are typically 3–4 hours in duration and may take place virtually or in the community (e.g., at home, rehabilitation centres, or workplaces).
Kurliand Speech Clinic is registered with HCAI (Health Claims for Auto Insurance) and can submit OCF-18 treatment plans directly to insurers for approval.

Our reports provide clear, objective, and clinically supported findings that meet the requirements for both medical-legal and insurance-related cases.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What is a Medical-Legal Assessment for Brain Injury?
A Medical-Legal Assessment evaluates the impact of a brain injury on communication and cognitive-communication skills. The report can be used to support insurance claims, legal cases, or treatment planning following an injury.
2. Who might need this type of assessment?
Individuals who have sustained a concussion or traumatic brain injury, particularly as a result of a motor vehicle accident, workplace injury, or fall, may require a comprehensive speech-language assessment for insurance or legal purposes.
3. How long does the assessment take?
The assessment typically takes 3–4 hours, depending on the individual’s needs, fatigue level, and the complexity of the case.
4. Where are assessments completed?
Assessments can be completed virtually (through secure video conferencing) or in the community, such as in the client’s home or rehabilitation setting.
5. Do you bill insurance directly?
Yes. Our clinic is registered with HCAI and can submit OCF-18 forms and treatment plans directly to your auto insurance provider for funding approval.
6. What does the report include?
You’ll receive a comprehensive written report summarizing assessment findings, the impact of the injury on communication and cognition, and recommendations for therapy or accommodations as needed.
7. Do I need a referral?
A referral is not required, but we frequently collaborate with lawyers, case managers, physicians, and occupational therapists involved in your care or claim.
