Why Can My Child Say a Sound Correctly but Not in Conversation?
Has your child learned to say a speech sound correctly during speech practice, but you still hear the old sound when they are talking naturally? You may notice that your child can produce a sound during speech therapy or structured practice, but has difficulty using the same sound during everyday conversations.
For example, your child may clearly say “school” during a speech activity but say it differently when telling you about their day.
If this sounds familiar, you may be wondering: Why can my child say the sound correctly during practice but not when speaking?
The answer often has to do with speech sound carryover and generalization.
Why can my child say a sound correctly during practice but not in conversation?
Producing a speech sound correctly during a structured activity is different from using that sound consistently during natural conversation.
During speech practice, your child can focus their attention on the target sound and the movements needed to produce it. They may have more time to think about their motor placement, listen to a model, and concentrate on producing the sound accurately.
Conversation is much more complex.
When your child is talking naturally, they need to listen to what someone is saying, understand the message, decide what they want to communicate, find the right words, organize their thoughts, construct sentences, and produce speech sounds—all at the same time.
Because of these additional demands, a child may be able to produce a speech sound correctly in a structured activity but have difficulty using that sound consistently in everyday communication.
Research also suggests that single-word speech and conversational speech can provide different information about a child's speech production (Masterson et al., 2005; Yeh & Liu, 2021).
This is one reason why speech-language pathologists (SLPs) often work on speech sounds in stages. Therapy may begin with simpler targets such as syllables and individual words before progressing to phrases, sentences, and eventually conversational speech (Preston et al., 2019).
What is speech sound carryover or generalization?
Speech sound generalization, also called carryover, occurs when a child begins to use a newly learned speech sound accurately across different words, speaking activities, people, and situations.
For example, a child working on the "r" sound may initially learn to produce "r" correctly in a single word such as “red.” As their speech skills develop, they may begin using "r" correctly in phrases such as “red rabbit,” then in sentences, and eventually during spontaneous conversation.
The goal of articulation therapy is not simply for a child to produce a sound correctly when prompted. The goal is for the child to eventually use the sound accurately and independently in everyday communication.
This process can take time, and it is normal for children to need continued practice as they move from structured speech activities to natural conversation.
How can I help my child practice speech sounds at home?
Home practice can be an important part of helping children develop speech sound carryover. Practicing speech targets outside of therapy gives your child additional opportunities to use their developing skills (Sugden et al., 2019).
If your child is working on the "r" sound, for example, you might begin by practicing a small number of target words such as:
red
rabbit
room
Once your child can produce the sound more consistently in individual words, you can gradually increase the level of difficulty by practicing phrases and sentences.
For example:
Word: “rabbit”
Phrase: “red rabbit”
Sentence: “I see a red rabbit.”
Eventually, you can look for opportunities to use the target words naturally during everyday activities.
You might practice while:
Getting ready in the morning
Playing at the park
Reading a book
Eating a meal
Driving in the car
Playing with toys
Talking about your child's day
Watching a favourite show
These everyday opportunities can help your child begin to carry their speech sound skills over into natural conversation.
Should I correct my child's speech every time?
Not necessarily. Constantly correcting your child's speech can make communication feel frustrating or stressful.
Instead, try providing positive reinforcement and gentle cues when appropriate. If your child produces the target sound correctly, let them know that you noticed their effort.
You can also model the correct production naturally rather than requiring your child to repeat the word every time.
For example, if your child says:
“I saw a wabbit!”
You could respond:
“You saw a rabbit! What was the rabbit doing?”
This gives your child another opportunity to hear the target sound without interrupting the conversation.
Your child's SLP can also recommend specific cues and home-practice strategies based on their speech sound needs.
How long does speech sound carryover take?
Every child is different. The amount of time it takes to develop consistent speech sound carryover can depend on the child's age, the speech sound being targeted, the type and severity of the speech sound difficulty, and how consistently the new sound is practiced.
Some children begin using a new sound in conversation relatively quickly, while others need more time and repeated practice across different levels of difficulty.
The important thing is to gradually move from structured speech practice to more natural communication rather than expecting a child to immediately use a new sound correctly in every conversation.
When should I consider speech therapy?
If your child consistently has difficulty producing certain speech sounds, is difficult for others to understand, or continues to rely on an old sound pattern despite practice, a speech-language pathologist (SLP) can assess their speech and determine whether speech therapy may be helpful.
An SLP can identify which sounds your child is having difficulty with, determine the underlying speech sound patterns, and develop individualized articulation and speech therapy goals.
Speech therapy may include structured practice, games and activities, parent education, and strategies to help your child carry newly learned speech skills into everyday communication.
